Strawberry Jam 2025 Post Mortem
Well I made another one.
Same issues as before… Too much time coding something then didn’t even use it Can only code during the weekends cause of work.
The only difference this time was I finally bought Naninovel which is a asset package I’ve seen a lot of Unity Visual Novel games use.
Sadly I didn’t really get to explore it all that much during the game jam cause I decided to buy it literally 5 days before it ended. I was in such a rush to finish the game I did not get to polish it OR add any sex scenes. I was more mad about the sex scenes to be honest cause I spent a bunch of time coding the dialogue system only to not use any of my code for it. Then when I was in the last stretch of the jam instead of just adding the sex scenes I just finished off the game as much as I could.
Then I spent a full 2 weeks trying to implement it and then last minute I really just said nope fuck it then bought Naninovel. Naninovel was fun but I ran into multiple errors from me rushing through getting it to work. Ultimately, I will be using this for my other games as well as the dialogue system remains the ONE system I spend most of a game jam coding only for it to be lackluster at the end.
Also if anyone was wondering why I decided to go with the play in browser option instead of download. Microsoft kept insisting there was a virus in the zip file of the game I had previously made. After doing multiple virus scans I found 0 viruses in the game (unsurprisingly). But it pissed me really the fuck off that happened at all so I took down the game until I could find an alternative or until the issue was fixed. For this game however, I did not want to deal with Microsoft lying out its ass for another time so I made the game a WebGL build and uploaded it.
The previous game I’m 100% sure does not have a virus because of multiple google searchs telling me it was a false positive plus ALL the files in the Zip file were created by Unity and should not have a virus in them. But regardless I did not want the headache of having to deal with this issue again.
And I don’t think I feel right telling people to turn off their virus protections to download an incomplete game. Sooo yeah WebGL build.
MOVING ON from my rant
“Is this my mate” was really fun to make. I will be making updates in the future (I know I know I said it like 100 times for every other game but unfortunately I need money and a job to survive and jobs are still 8 hours a day)
The story is still going to be tied to Asteria as with the other games but less combat focused. I was hoping to make Asteria into an actual comic but I’ve found out I barely any time to do that. So game jams give me an excuse to start doing some world building.
As for the theme… I settled on making it a fan version of Thats Not My Neighbor. I really loved that game and Papers Please. I was hoping to get further into the whole imposter mechanic but currently there’s only 2 different ways to decipher imposters in my game. Either their name is wrong or their id is wrong.
Was gonna make the expy date wrong, wrong weapon on character (Mage with Dagger or Swordsmaster with wrong sword).
I didn’t even get the dialogue to work 100% with the tastes. Initially the characters were supposed to have specific traits they prefered their mate to have BUT since I only had 3 characters there wasn’t much to work with. Plus I was still learning Naninovel and was trying to understand how to get the dialogue to work with dynamic variables. I would want some of the traits to be things you saw on the characters too. The player was supposed to have conversations with the visitor to find out who they liked, and what their preferences were.
A dominant character would speak straightforward while a subby character would be more reserved. They would say what they liked and, if I got far enough, what they didnt like and you get points based on the 2 people you assigned to the room. The key system was essentially just put the character in the room you want them to be in. If you werent sure of a character you could put them in one of the empty rooms. You lose only 100 points so you could put 2 imposters in 1 room if you were really unsure about them.
The main mechanic I’m pissed I didnt get into the game in time was the sex scenes. You were supposed to get a sex scene based on who you assigned to each room. The compatible characters were the ones most with a sex scene. I was even planning to make a sex scene if you had 2 imposters in the same room but alas maybe another day.
Ultimately, I’m happy I made another game although I really wished I did more.
